We lost an avid cyclist and friend as Richard left this life to ride off into the Arizona Sunset. Rich loved the cycling life and left his mark on the Perimeter Bicycling community from its inception in 1983. He was dedicated to El Tour de Tucson by being one of the seven GABA members who voted in favor of supporting the premier production of El Tour. Rich continued to support El Tour throughout his life until he was not able to do so due to physical challenges associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. As the past Pima Association of Governments Bicycle Coordinator he was instrumental in developing the original El Tour route, much of which we still follow today.

The 1993 Tour of the Tucson Mountains was dedicated to Rich because of his outstanding contributions to the development of bicycling in the Tucson/Pima County Community and for being one of the Founders of GABA – Tucson and Bike Patrol Director for Perimeter Bicycling. He received the 1990 El Tour Michael Mossman Safety Award for the work he performed on the Governor’s Council for Bicycle Safety in helping to make Arizona a safer place for cyclists of all ages and abilities.

Rich was one of the pioneers of cycling development in Arizona and  Tucson/Pima County serving on every cycling related committee or organization including: Pima County/Tucson Bicycle Advisory committee, El Tour de Tucson Board of Directors, GABA-Tucson, Governor’s Council for Bicycle Safety , League of American Bicyclist’s League Certified Instructor (LCI # 123), Perimeter Bicycling’s Director of Bike Patrol, Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists and Tucson/Pima County “on the Road to Platinum Bicycle Friendly Committee.

Where there was bicycling, there was Richard.

A Memorial event is pending and will be announced in a future Perimeter e-News and on El Tour’s Facebook.
