TUCSON, Ariz. (May 4, 2016) — Perimeter Bicycling Association of America is pleased to announce Tucson Medical Center (TMC) as title sponsor for one of the premier cycling events in the United States which will be known as Tucson Medical Center 34th El Tour de Tucson presented by Casino Del Sol Resort.

The title sponsorship, for the second year, is part of TMC’s ongoing commitment to improve the health and well-being of the people of Southern Arizona. As Tucson’s nonprofit community hospital, Tucson Medical Center continues its investment in the quality of life and overall health of the Tucson community. Casino Del Sol Resort is in its fourth year as presenting sponsor. This is the 34th year for El Tour with more than 8,000 riders on the streets for the 2016 event Nov. 19 and another 3,000 participants in Indoor El Tour, an event designed for stationary bicyclists.ETT 2015 StartMarathonPhoto330x219px

“We are delighted to renew what has been a very successful association with such a well-known and well-respected organization as Tucson Medical Center,” said Richard DeBernardis, founder & president of El Tour de Tucson. “TMC has been promoting health, wellness and safety in this community for over two decades. They are a perfect fit with El Tour’s mission of bicycling for better mental and physical health. We have had a fantastic relationship with TMC for many years. Their continuance as title sponsor demonstrates the value we both see in such a partnership. “

“El Tour is such a fundamental part of Tucson and what defines Tucson as a unique and vibrant, healthy community,” according to Julia Strange, the vice president of community benefits for TMC. “We received such positive feedback (last year). Our employees rode in it, our physicians rode in it, we received positive feedback throughout the community. We participated in El Tour at different levels throughout the year. We were pleased that we were able to, at this point in time, step in again as the title sponsor.”

“We need the support of TMC and the presenting sponsor, Casino Del Sol Resort,” DeBernardis continued. “In the end, our sponsors are responsible for the $15-$20 million in economic impact generated by El Tour for our community.’

In order to put on this event, El Tour needs to cover the estimated $1.4 million in event expenses. That breaks down to about $700,000 in underwriting and $700,000 in registration fees.

Together, everyone involved in El Tour contributes to creating a vibrant, exciting event for cyclists of all ages and fitness levels; for local cyclists and those from around the world.

In keeping with those ideas, the theme of this year’s El Tour is Come Together, Ride Now. “El Tour gives all the sponsors and all the charitable agencies a chance to celebrate together, to ride together,” said DeBernardis. “No matter where we come from, what age, what ability, we like to have a good time and show our community that we come together year after year for a terrific event. This is your event. It is about reaching across all the boundaries that separate us from each other. We come together, ride together, share together and succeed together.”

A new 25-mile leg will make its debut for the 2016 El Tour in the Town of Marana, creating an appealing distance for families and anyone who wants to take on a shorter distance than the 104, 75, 55, or 40-miler. Organizers expect that 500-1,000 cyclists will find the distance and the later start time an attractive alternative.

Organizers are also encouraging cyclists to get on The Loop (Pima County’s system of shared-use paths) to navigate around metro Tucson on El Tour ride day. With links to Marana, Oro Valley, and South Tucson, Pima County residents and visitors can enjoy the more than 100 miles of shared-use paths to make their way to the various starts and venues.

Easter Seals Blake Foundation is El Tour’s primary beneficiary. Easter Seals Blake Foundation is fully committed to the health and well-being of our community, providing support and inspiring action so that everyone can reach for and realize their full potential. In 2015, nearly $16 million was raised for more than 50 charitable agencies.

DeBernardis founded El Tour in 1983, a 198-person event raising $5,500, with the objective of making it the United States’ largest charity-fundraising bicycling event. He’s done that with more than $51 million raised for charities throughout the event’s 33-year history. The event also serves the community by educating cyclists of the importance of fitness through cycling.

Other notable supporters include Cenpatico Integrated Care, offering a large network of behavioral health providers across southern Arizona, and Rio Nuevo, focusing on development of a vibrant downtown Tucson. Support also comes from Alvernon Optical, ASARCO, BroadPath, CPGraphics, Desert Mountain Insurance Services, Hensley Beverage Company, HSL Properties, Hudbay, McDonalds, Madden Media, Michelob ULTRA, Pactimo, Picor Commercial Real Estate Services, Pizza Hut, Rusing Lopez & Lizardi, Tucson Pain Institute and Visit Tucson.
